AU has a part-time opening  for an Hispanic Outreach Coordinator.  This individual will be a part of AU's Latino Initiative expansion, funded by a grant awarded to AU by the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving.

The ideal candidate will be an energetic, vivacious person who can help us reach and engage Spanish consumers and families that are in need of education regarding rights, responsibilities, laws, and employment for persons with psychiatric disabilities or co-occurring disorders.

2010 ING Hartford Marathon

2010 ING Hartford Marathon / 2nd Annual AU Fundraiser
AU is proud to be  an official charity of the ING Hartford Marathon again this year as part of AU's 2nd Annual Fundraiser.  And you can help support us!

This year's event takes place on Saturday, October 9th.  Last year's marathon was a hugely successful event, raising over $500,000 for charities throughout Connecticut, providing Hartford with positive national coverage, and seeing AU's Linda Lentini completing the half-marathon in under 1 hour, 50 minutes.

AU's Recovery University

Recovery University
Recovery University is a  60-hour advanced training and certification program for persons in recovery from psychiatric disabilities or co-occurring disorders.  Upon successful completion of the course and certification test, graduates will be state certified as Recovery Support Specialists, Peer Delivered Services.  For details and complete information, see Recovery University.

The Walk To Washington

The Walk To Washington
A Call to Action!  The Walk To Washington is an awesome event to raise awareness for depression, bipolar disorder, and other stigmatized mental illnesses.

"WalktoWashington.org"  has organized an 850 mile walk from St. Louis to Washington, D.C., that began August 14th. They are also gathering 1,000,000 signatures on the petition to be presented at the Capitol Building in Washington D.C. on October 7th.  More signatures are needed and welcome!  See more info about this event and sign the petition at The Walk To Washington!

Young Adult ''Super Advocate'' students

Young Adult “Super Advocate” Program
3rd Young Adult Graduation celebratedOn Friday, June 25th, an extremely successful graduation was held at Greater Bridgeport Mental Health Center with 14 courageous young adults graduating from AU's third Young Adult "Super Advocate" Course.  See 3rd YA Graduation.

AU's Young Adult “Super Advocate” Program  is an advocacy training course designed specifically for young adults in recovery ages 18 to 25.  It is an initiative for young adults to make a difference by spreading the message of recovery through advocacy from concerns of mental health and substance abuse issues.

The CT Disability Advocacy Collaborative (CDAC), in partnership with Connect-Ability, is devoting a special section of CDAC's 2010 Disability Convention & Expo for "A Focus on Employment".  See Focus on Employment for more info.

Graduates of the Advocacy Education Course

 become part of a grassroots network of trained advocates that help others in their recovery, especially by advocating for their rights and teaching them to advocate for themselves. Graduates of Recovery University become state certified as Recovery Support Specialists, Peer Delivered Services. It is the only state sanctioned certification program for Recovery Support Specialists. Young adults completing the Young Adult "Super Advocate" Program enhance their own recoveries and are able to make a difference by spreading the message of recovery through advocacy to their peers. Online Self-Study Courses are free and open to all website visitors.

AU's programs are open to any Connecticut resident who has, or is in recovery from, a psychiatric disability or co-occurring disorder and who is age 18 or older. 
 

In addition to our comprehensive education programs

, Advocacy Unlimited provides a wealth of information, support, and resources pertaining to mental health and the issues surrounding mental illness, including awareness, discrimination, and stigma. AU has developed a network of mental health advocates across Connecticut trained to help and support others with psychiatric disabilities or co-occurring disorders.

Our core value and belief is that everyone should be treated equally regardless of race, gender, or disability. Knowledge and skills ensure that people play a central role in shaping the services and policies that affect their lives.
